If you want to know how to make a million dollars, there are higher quality questions you could be asking.

The truth is that it’s harder than you think. In fact, I purposely worked for free for an entire year before I even sold my first product.

This article will show you why I’m glad I took that approach.

There are some really interesting paradigms that I figured out early on as I was building my business.

This different way of doing things helped me reach the level of success I have today.

A lot of people don’t think like this when they’re starting their business.

I was kind of surprised it wasn’t happening. But I really think it made all the difference.

The Unconventional Approach To Business

The very first thing I did was I decided to work for free for an entire year.

Now, how can you build a business if you’re working for free?

Let me explain…

My business started when I released a ton of free content into the marketplace.

I sat down and spent hours upon hours every day creating content in different forms.

  • Writing blog posts
  • Recording YouTube videos
  • Answering questions

Overall I was being of service to people and asked for only 1 thing in return.

I asked them to sign up for my free email newsletter. When they signed up I didn’t spam them with a paid offer at all.

I decided to send them more free stuff and give more free value.

How Most People Try To Make A Million Dollars

They’re starting a new business and they want to make money.

So they try to monetize their audience right away.

  • “Let’s do a free + shipping offer”
  • “I want to monetize that customer on day 1”

And in many instances building a business that way works.

But understand that there’s going to be a barrier when you’re asking somebody to give you money from day 1.

What I did instead was just give value and build relationships.

how to make a million dollarsSo what I did was build up an email list of 1,000’s of people in the beginning.

And what happened was that people began asking me to build a product. They wanted me to be the one to craft solutions to their problems.

Instead of starting a business that shoves their products down customers’ throats.

We ended up having a 10% conversion rate on our very first product launch.

What do I mean by 10% conversion rate? Why is this such a big deal?

Normally in direct response marketing people get a 1 or 2% conversion.

Ours was 5-10x higher than the norm. On our very first product.

The thing I did differently was I gave value for free and built relationships for a full year.

Build A make millionsBusiness That’s Scalable

There are plenty of things I could have done with my time instead.

I could have gotten a job. Or I would have made more money in that first year doing 1-on-1 consulting.

It’s possible that I could have made $100,000 during that time.

But the problem is that it wasn’t scalable.

I built the infrastructure of that business with no money coming in at all.

And that’s what eventually led to me building a very successful business.
